On September 5, 1989, the Royal Mail of Great Britain issued a set of four stamps to commemorate Microscopy and the centennial of the Royal Microscopial Society. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, celebrating Early Microscopy and Robert Hooke, a brilliant physicist who built one of the world's first microscopes, cancelled from the city of issue (Edinburgh) on the first day of issue captioned above. The stamp features a Blue Fly x 5, as seen by Hooke in the 17th century.
The color cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a drawing in silhouette of a person gazing into an early microscope. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about Hooke and his contributions to science, which we've included.
Matted in blue, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
