On August 8, 2003, the USPS issued a set of four stamps called Early Football Heroes, honoring Ernie Nevers, Bronko Nagurski, Red Grange, and Walter Camp. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp for Ernie Nevers cancelled from the city of issue (South Bend, IN) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special postmark created for the cancellation of this set of stamps on their 'birthday.'
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Nevers, a small full length portrait in uniform, and his signature. Legendary football coach Pop Warner one called Nevers, ..."the greatest player I ever coached." The producer of this cover has also written a short commentary about Nevers including the game against Red Grange's Chicago Bears and the NFL's longest standing individual record held by Nevers.
Double matted in blue and white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
