Eleanor Roosevelt - In Memoriam.... On October 11, 1963, the USPS issued an In Memoriam stamp honoring Eleanor Roosevelt for her championing the rights of women, youths , minorities, and the disadvantaged.
It is the norm for every President to have an In Memoriam stamp issued
within a year of his death; it is NOT the norm for anyone else. To
date only two people who were not US Presidents have been issued an In
Memoriam stamp by the US Postal Service....Winston Churchill and
Eleanor Roosevelt....yes, that's how rare an event it is! Shown here is a genuine FIRST DAY COVER, an envelope with the new stamp depicting a portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt cancelled from the CITY OF ISSUE (Washington DC) on the FIRST DAY OF ISSUE captioned above.
The black and white cachet (artwork
on the envelope) features a portrait of Roosevelt, a drawing of a
candle and the words, "In Memoriam - Eleanor Roosevelt 1884-1962 -
'She would rather light a candle than curse the darkness, and her glow
has warmed the world' - Adlai Stevenson"
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED***
