Dr. William H. Pickering has probably done more to further space research than any other man. Born in New Zealand, Pickering joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1944, which, in turn, was transferred to NASA in 1958. From Projects Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo to Ranger, Surveyor, Mariner and Viking Orbiter space vehicles, Pickering has been there. In 1975, he was presented with the National Medal of Science. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover to celebrate his induction into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.
On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp is immaterial; it's only there because the Post Office will not cancel unless there is current postage. On this cover a New Zealand stamp was used. The postmark is from Wellington, NZ, Pickering's place of birth, on December 24, 1980, the anniversary of his birth.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Dr. William H. Pickering with Mars and the Viking Orbiter in the background. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary about Pickering, which we, in turn, have included.
Matted in blue, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included plus Commentary Included***
