On February 25, 2003, the Royal Post of Great Britain issued a set of five stamps celebrating The Secret of Life - DNA and the Genome. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an oversized envelope with all five stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Edinburgh) on the first day of issue captioned above. And what a delightful set of stamps they are! Colorful graphics and clever wit tell the story of unlocking the Human Genome. Note the unique postmark with the quotation 'Our fate is in our genes' designed to cancel these stamps on their 'birthday.'
The first stamp on the left titled 'The End of the Beginning' shows two scientists with the final piece of the Genome Puzzle. The next stamp commemorationg Comparative Genetics shows a scientist and chimp looking at each other through bars, the latter looking suspiciously like the scientist! The middle stamp commemorates 'Cracking the Code'...the double helix taking on the shape of a ladder. The yellow stamp celebrates Genetic Engineering with a group of scientists taking on various animal forms, and the two scientists sporting questionable tails. The final stamp calls attention to Medical Futures and all this new-found knowledge holds for the future of humanity. Our scientist is looking into his crystal DNA ball.
This is a must-have for anyone working in the field of genetics. It's matted in blue and is sized to fit a standard 8 1/2x11 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
