On October 27, 1976, the USPS issued their secular Holiday stamp depicting a painting by Nathaniel Currier called "Winter Pastime. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Boston, Mass.) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a detail of a Currier & Ives print showing sleigh-racing. "A Spill Out" on the Snow was an 1870 print that featured nine sleighs racing about in a farmer's field. Frankly, the selection of a Currier & Ives print was the perfect selection for our bicentennial year; the two noted lithographers accurately portrayed every aspect of American life in the 19th century. The producer of this cover has also included a brief commentary about Currier & Ives and sleighs. Did you know that sleighs of certain prominent families had colors just for them ...Vanderbilt maroon and Astor blue!
Double matted in green & white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
