Joseph E. Johnston.... On
June 29, 1995, the USPS issued a set of twenty stamps commemorating
people and events of the Civil War. One of the people honored was Joseph E. Johnston, an outstanding Confederate General. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Gettysburg) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the Special Cancellation designed for this set of stamps.
The cachet (artwork on
the envelope) features a color portrait of Johnston against the Battle
Flag of the Confederacy. At the bottom are Confederate soldiers and the
following caption, "Joseph Johnston - Confederate general, American
hero, surrendering his forces to Sherman." Historic, collectible this
is one of many Civil War pieces of memorabilia offered by Postal Stamp Art. A short commentary on Johnston is printed on the back of the envelope which we have copied and included for you.
Double matted in gray & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
