From 1961 to 1965, the USPS issued a stamp each year to commemorate an event of the Civil War....Ft. Sumter (4/12/61), Shiloh (4/07/62), Gettysburg (7/01/63), The Wilderness (5/05/64), and Appomattox (4/09/65.) These five stamps make up the Civil War Centennial Series. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, a Collector Panel Card with all five stamps cancelled on the 'birthday' of the Appomattox stamp - 4/09/65. Since the other four stamps had older issue dates, this is called a Combo, a very special first day cover.
The spectacular black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) features two soldiers, one Union, one Confederate with their respective flags, a quotation by Abraham Lincoln, and an American Eagle and a ribbon, with the dates of the Civil War plus the dates for its Centennial, framing the five stamps. This is a historic, very collectible piece of Civil War Postal Memorabilia that one doesn't see very often.
Double matted in maroon & gold, it's sized to fit a standard 11x14 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
