Year of the Rat - 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996.....On February 8, 1996, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the Year of the Rat in the Chinese New Year. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (San Francisco, CA) on the first day of issue captioned above. All stamps in this series were designed by artist Clarence Lee, who created an innovative, yet traditional look, by combining paper-cut type designs with calligraphy.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features some brightly-colored costumed characters in a Chinese New Year celebration. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about The Year of the Rat, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 X 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
