Year of the Dragon - 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000.....On January 6, 2000, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese New Year. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (San Francisco, CA) on the first day of issue captioned above. All stamps in this series were designed by artist Clarence Lee, who created an innovative, yet traditional look, by combining paper-cut designs with calligraphy.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) is printed on silk and features a majestic Dragon against a dark red background. The artwork is surrounded by a border of embossed gold.
