On February 3, 1998, the USPS issued a set of fifteen stamps selected to represent the first decade of the 20th century in their 150 stamp series called "Celebrate the Century." Shown here is the stamp commemorating the Gibson Girl on a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The color cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts the Gibson Girl in profile and her creator, illustrator Charles Dana Gibson. Tall, graceful, a long slender neck with a cloud of hair piled on her head, dressed in a long, flowing shirtwaist dress, the Gibson Girl was the paragon of femininity...the first time 'an American look' permeated the American psyche. The picture is 'framed' in an art nouveau style border.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
