Charles W. Chesnutt.... On January 31, 2008, the USPS issued a stamp to honor author, essayist and political activist Charles W. Chesnutt in its on-going Black Heritage series. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp, featuring a sepia portrait of Chesnutt, cancelled from the city of issue (Cleveland, Ohio) on the first day of issue
captioned above. Note the beautiful postmark, depicting an ink pen nib
and flourish, created expressly to cancel this stamp on its
'birthday.'
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of Chesnutt against a backdrop of his best-known book, The Conjure Woman, featuring the character of Uncle Julius, teller of fantastical tales. The cachet is printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three dimensional look to the picture; a gold embossed border 'frames' the portrait.
Historic, collectible it's matted in blue & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
