C.R. Smith, the first President of American Airlines, became an unlikely man to revolutionize modern airline travel. He built a world-class airline and introduced SABRE, the computer reservation system that is still in use today. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover to celebrate his induction into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame on March 16, 1996.
On a commemorative cover, the stamp is immaterial; it's only there because the Post Office will not cancel unless there is current postage. On this cover an airmail Wright Brothers stamp issued in 1978 was used as well as the 1957 US Air Force stamp. The postmark is from Minerva, Texas, where Smith was born and the date "freezes" his induction date into the Hall of Fame.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Cyrus Rowlett Smith, a DC-3 which he had standardized to his specifications, and the distinctive American Airlines logo. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary about Smith, which we, in turn, have included.
Matted in blue, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included plus Commentary Included***
