"March 9, 1865 - Control of Southwest Creek, 3 miles east of Kinston, NC, was the key to controlling troop and supply movements in the area. It was here the Rebels hoped to stop the Federals. Confederate Calvary under the command of Generals Wade Hampton and Joseph Wheeler launched a surprise attack on Gen. Judson Kilpatrick. The Union soldiers rallied and beat off their attackers. Fighting continued outside of Kinston as Confederate Gen. Bragg tried to defeat Gen. Cox's troops before they could link up with Sherman's advancing army. Gen. Cox, bolstered by reinforcements, rushed to his aid from the east, was able to successfully maintain his position."
Shown here is a genuine Commemorative Cover, an envelope 'freezing a day and place' that an earlier event occurred. The postmark of March 9, 1990 from Kinston, NC does exactly that. The stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of the statehood of North Carolina, merely serves the purpose of providing current postage, for, without it, the post office would not affix the cancellation mark.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a battle scene. It's printed on silk, the luminosity giving the picture a three-dimensional quality. The afore-mentioned quotation is printed on the lower portion of the envelope. Historic, collectible, this small envelope captures an important event in the Civil War.
Double matted in gray & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. At Wall Art Collectibles, we always mat to standard frame sizes, allowing you the flexibility to select the frame of your choice.
