Comiskey Park - "Baseball Palace to the World"......
On June 27, 2001, the USPS issued a set of ten stamps to commemorate Ten Classic Ballparks. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover for Comiskey Park, home to the Chicago White Sox. The stamp of an interior view of Old Comiskey is cancelled from the city of issue (Chicago, IL) on the first day of issue captioned above. Instead of the usual one city of issue selected for the vast majority of stamps, this set of ten stamps had FOUR....Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Boston. Obviously, the best cancellation one could have for the Chicago White Sox is Chicago, and here it is.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features an interior view of Old Comiskey, with the first 'exploding' scoreboard initiated by, then new owner Bill Veeck, in 1960. In 1933, the first All-Star game was held in the park, won by the American League with a home run by Babe Ruth. In 1990, the last game between the White Sox and the Mariners, with a win by the Sox, ended an era lasting 80 years. In 1991, it was demolished making way for Comiskey II built next door. The company that produced this cover has also written a brief commentary about Comiskey, which we've included.
Double matted in green and white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
