On June 13, 1987, the USPS issued a set of 50 stamps commemorating North American Wildlife. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, depicting the California Sea Lion cancelled from the city of issue (the USPS Station set up in Toronto, Canada to coincide with the Canada Stamp Show) on the first day of issue captioned above. The addition of two other stamps - the California State Bird (California Quail) and State Flower (California Poppy), and the distinctive California State Flag make this a Combo....an extra special first day cover. The two older stamps were added to the envelope along with the new one and then all three were cancelled on the 'birthday' of the California Sea Lion Stamp.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features artwork of a family of California Sea Lions by noted wildlife artist Dan Balke. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about the California Sea Lion, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
