On August 22, 1985, the USPS issued a stamp honoring the Franciscan Priest, Missionary, and Explorer Fr. Junipero Serra. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the full-color stamp, depicting Serra and the first of 9 West Coast Missions personally founded by Fr. Junipero Serra, San Diego de Alcala, cancelled from the city of issue (San Diego, CA) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The sepia cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) shows the Mission, Fr. Junipero Serra, and the State of California. In recognition of his contributions in founding and settling California, as well as his role in defending and educating the Indians, Father Serra's statue stands in the Hall of Fame in the U.S. Capitol. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about Serra, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
