On September 20, 1988, the USPS issued an imprinted postage postcard commemorating the Hearst Castle, the fanciful 90,080 sq. foot series of buildings built by William Randolph Hearst and designed by architect, Julia Morgan. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, a postcard with the imprint or 'stamp', cancelled from the city of issue (San Simeon, CA) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features the two main towers and Hearst himself. The zebra signifies the inclusion of Hearst's private zoo. Today this historic enclave with its splendid architecture and extensive art collection is owned by the state of California, delighting thousands of visitors annually. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about the Hearst Castle, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
