On February 3, 1998, the USPS issued a stamp honoring the World Champion Heavyweight Boxer of the early 20th Century, Jack Dempsey. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above. This stamp is one of a set of fifteen selected to represent the decade from 1910 to 1919 in the 150 set of stamps called Celebrate the Century.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a black & white portrait of the "Manassas Mauler," who defended his title five times. Collectible, historic, can't-be--duplicated, this is a great piece of boxing memorabilia. Also included is a short historical bio of Dempsey. Because the original collector of this cover chose to have his name and address typed on the envelope, we have covered over it with a sticker that reads, 'First Day of Issue.'
Double matted in blue & white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Bio Included***
