Booker T Washington TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE 1st Day Cover.... On April 7, 1940, the USPS issued a stamp to honor educator Booker T. Washington. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new 10-cents Booker T. Washington stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Tuskegee Institute, AL) on the first day of issue captioned above...the 'birthday of the stamp.'
The cachet (artwork on
the envelope created by a private company, not the USPS) shows a
portrait of Washington with a view of Tuskegee Institute in the
background. The text below reads, "Booker T. Washington 1856-1915
Negro Educator and Reformer First Day of Issue." The original collector
of this cover had it returned to him through the mail by having his
return address type written on the front of the envelope - standard
practice in 1940. We have covered the address with a label reading
'First Day of Issue' in order to make the envelope more visually
appealing. Collectible and historic, this cover will be mounted using
acid free clear corner mounts to preserve its mint condition.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included*** |
