Bear Bryant... The US postal stamp for Alabama Football Coach Bear Bryant was issued individually on August 7, 1997 after having been issued with three other football coaches (Vince Lombardi, George Halas, and Pop Warner) a month before on July 25, 1997. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope cancelled from the city of issue (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) on the first day of issue captioned above. If you look closely at this stamp, there is a red line above Bryant's name. On his stamp issued in July 1997, there is no red line. This is true for the stamps of the other three coaches.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a spectacular portrait of Bryant rendered in watercolors. The only other college football coach to be honored with a stamp to date is Knute Rockne of Notre Dame.
