On February 18, 1999, the USPS issued a set of fifteen stamps to represent people and events of the decade of the 1940's. One of these events was the Big Band Sound, music that defined a generation. Some of the greatest musicians of the swing era included Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, the Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover with the stamp, depicting a Big Band and female singer, cancelled from the city of issue ( Dobbins Air Force Base, Georgia), on the first day of issue captioned above. This 15 stamp set was, in turn, part of a 150 stamp set called "Celebrate the Century" with 150 stamps in total - the largest series of stamps the USPS has issued.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope), features two instrumentalists, an important part of a swing band. The company has written a short commentary about Big Band Music, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
