On April 27, 1991,the USPS issued an airmail stamp to honor pioneer aviator Harriet Quimby. Little known, Quimby holds two distinctions in her brief two-year aviation career. She was the first American woman to receive her pilot's license, and the first American woman to fly across the English Channel. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with Quimby's stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Plymouth, Mi.) on the first day of issue (captioned above.)
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Quimby as well as a picture of men holding back her brakeless plane as she prepares for takeoff over the English Channel. Known for her flamboyant attire, the stamp shows Quimby in her elegant plum-colored satin flight suit and hood. Collectible, historic, this is a great piece of aviation memorabilia.
Double matted in blue and white,, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. *** Certificate of Authenticity Included***
