Vice Admiral Arleigh Burke distinguished himself by his brilliant and swift nighttime raids on the Japanese, earning him the nickname "thirty-one knot Burke," considerably lessening the threat of an attack on Australia.
Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of October 19 from Boulder, CO commemorating the anniversary of Burke's birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are the US Flag Stamp and the 1945 stamp honoring the US Navy at the end of WWII.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Burke, a destroyer, and a submarine. Also included is a short commentary about the daring stategy of Burke in the Pacific Theater.
