Mother Joseph was declared "The First Architect of the Pacific Northwest" by the American Institute of Architects. A nun with the Sisters of Charity of Providence, Mother Joseph was given the task of leading a group of missionaries to the Pacific Northwest in the middle of the 19th century. She put her talents as an architect, artist and carpenter to work and was responsible for the building of eleven hospitals, seven academies, five Indian schools and two orphanges throughout a territory that today encompasses Washington, northern Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.
A US Flag stamp and the American Institute of Architects stamp are cancelled from Olympia, Washington - the capital of Washington which nominated Mother Joseph to Statuary Hall in Washington DC, on April 16, 1983 - the anniversary of her birth in 1823. A Commemorative Cover 'freezes' a place and and a date of historical interest.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Mother Joseph and her statue from Statuary Hall. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary about Mother Joseph, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 X 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
