Few people are remembered for one word...General Anthony C. McAuliffe is one of those people.  Surrounded by Germans in December of 1944 in the town of Bastogne, Belgium, McAuliffe, commander of the 101st Airborne, upon a demand for surrender of the Americans or the entire town would be annihilated, responded, "Nuts!"  Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of July 2, 1991 from Washington DC.  McAuliffe was born in our nation's capital on July 2, 1898. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation.

The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of McAuliffe, the Screaming Eagle of the 101st Airborne, his 4 stars, and his famous reply, "Nuts!"  Also included is a short commentary of this event leading to a victorious Allied conclusion to the Battle of the Bulge.  Historic, collectible, this is one of several pieces of WWII Postal Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectibles.

Matted in military green,  this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
