The USPS honored novelist Washington Irving with a stamp in 1940. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Tarrytown, N.Y.) on the first day of issue (January 29, 1940.) In 1940 most First Day Covers were addressed since the collector was responsible for sending the envelope to the city of issue in order for the new stamp to be put on and cancelled on its day of issue. This cover is no exception. Because the address was written in ink, we have applied a sticker that says "First Day of Issue" in order that the address not interfere with the artistic value of the cover.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a black & white portrait of Irving. Historic, collectible, it's double matted in green & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
