America's Cup - Defender....

On September 15, 1980, the USPS issued an imprinted envelope with the imprint or stamp commemorating the America's Cup.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the "stamp" cancelled from the city of issue (Newport, Rhode Island) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features Defender - the  second America's Cup winning design by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. It's printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three-dimensional look to the picture.  To the right of the picture it says,  "Lord Dunraven challenged again in 1895 with Valkyrie III.  The yacht Defender won the first race and in the second Valkyrie III fouled her and was disqualified.  Just before the start of the third race Valkyrie III withdrew, complaining of interference by the spectator fleet.  Defender sailed the course and was declared the winner.  It was after this race that Dunraven was expelled as an honorary member of the New York Yacht Club."  This cover is one of a 'Limited Edition' of 1,400.

Double matted in blue & white, this piece is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
