America's Cup - Columbia....

On September 15, 1980, the USPS issued an imprinted envelope with the imprint or stamp commemorating the America's Cup.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the "stamp" cancelled from the city of issue (Newport, Rhode Island) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features Columbia - designed by Nathaniel Herreshoff to defend the America's Cup challenges of 1899 and 1901. It's printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three-dimensional look to the picture.  To the right of the picture it says,  "In 1899 came a challenge from the Royal Ulster Yacht Club and Sir Thomas Lipton appeared on the scene.  He was determined to win the Cup for England and spared no expense in the design and building of his 129 foot sloop Shamrock.  No less eager to win was J. Pierpont Morgan who commissioned the expert Nathaniel Herreshoff to design and build ColumbiaColumbia took all three races.  Lipton again challenged in 1901 with Shamrock II and was again defeated by the Columbia in three races but by only 41 seconds in the third."  This cover is one of a 'Limited Edition' of 1,400.

Double matted in blue & white, this piece is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
