AAmerica's Cup - Vigilant....

America's Cup - Vigilant....

On September 15, 1980, the USPS issued an imprinted envelope with the imprint or stamp commemorating the America's Cup.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the "stamp" cancelled from the city of issue (Newport, Rhode Island) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the centerboard sloop, Vigilant, the first of five defenders of the America's Cup designed by the Herreshoff shop. It's printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three-dimensional look to the picture.  To the right of the picture it says,  "In 1893 the Earl of Dunraven arrived with his Valkyrie II.  He was well liked and his fast, sleek boat posed a real threat.  She lost the first two races, but was well ahead in the third when she blew out two spinnakers.  By valiant effort, Vigilant managed to beat her by 40 seconds in one of the most exciting races in Cup history."  This cover is one of a Limited Edition of 1,400.

Double matted in blue & white, this piece is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
