Marine Major General Alexander Vandegrift and his First Marine Division were left stranded on Guadalcanal in 1942. For six months they fought to protect the airstrip and beachhead, living on supplies left by Japanese workers who had quickly fled when the Marines landed. For his leadership and bravery he was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of March 13 - Vandegrift's birthday, from Charlottesville, VA - his place of birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used to furnish postage are a U.S. flag stamp and the 3 cents U.S. Marines stamp issued 7/11/45.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Vandegrift, the U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal, and the 1st Marine Division Emblem. Also included is a short commentary of the heroism of the 1st Marine Division. Historic, collectible, this is one of several pieces of WWII and U.S. Marines Postal Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectibles.
Matted in military green, this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
