Anna Julia Cooper.... On
June 11, 2009, the USPS issued a stamp, as a part of its ongoing Black
Heritage series, to honor a most remarkable woman...scholar and author Anna Julia Cooper. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover,
an envelope with the new stamp, featuring a portrait in profile of a
woman who overcame great odds to earn her Doctorate of Philosophy
degree, champion the cause of education, and encourage successful black
women to help and support their underprivleged peers. The stamp is
cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC - her longtime home) on the first day of issue
captioned above. Note the unique postmark, depicting a student in cap
and gown, created expressly to cancel this stamp on its 'birthday.'
The cachet
(artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of Cooper along with her
well-known quotation that appears on all United States passports, "The
cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a
class - it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of
humanity." The cachet is printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three dimensional look to the picture; a gold embossed border 'frames' the portrait.
Historic, collectible it's matted in blue & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
