Alaska - 50th Anniversary of Statehood... On January 3, 2009, the USPS issued a stamp commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Alaska Statehood. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover,
an envelope with the full-color stamp, depicting the majestic mountains
of Alaska and a dog team pulling a sled across the frozen
tundra, cancelled from the city of issue (Anchorage, AK- Alaska's largest city) on the first day of issue
captioned above. The addition of three older stamps, which were all
cancelled along with the new stamp on its 'birthday' make this a Combo - the most prized of 1st Day Covers. The older stamps include a 3-cents stamp showing Mt. McKinley and issued on November 12, 1937. The 7-cents air Mail stamp celebrates the official induction of Alaska as a state on January 3, 1959, the date the stamp was issued. The 20-cents stamp celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Alaska Statehood and was issued January 3, 1984.
The full-color cachet
(artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post
office) shows a canoe gliding across a still lake, the majestic
mountains of Alaska in the background. It's printed on silk, the luster lending an almost three dimensional quality to the artwork.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
