Racing at Dorsett Ferry, Windsor 1684The First 1793.... On June 6, 1979, the Royal Mail of Great Britain issued a set of four stamps to celebrate Horse Racing in Great Britain and the 200th Anniversary of The Darby. The stamps depict Racing at Dorsett Ferry, Windsor 1684; The First Spring Meeting, Newmarket 1793; The Liverpool Great National Steeple Chase 1839; and, Saddling of Mahmoud for the Derby 1936. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, showing Racing at Dorsett Ferry, Windsor 1684 - King Charles II, one of the great patrons of the turf looking on, cancelled from the city of issue (Windsor, Berks.) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts a racing day in the country, printed on silk and 'framed' by a gold-embossed border. Collectible, historic this is a beautiful piece of postal stamp art to honor Horse Racing in Great Britain.
