Saddling Mahmoud for The Derby 1936.... On June 6, 1979, the Royal Mail of Great Britain issued a set of four stamps to celebrate Horse Racing in Great Britain and the 200th Anniversary of the The Darby. The stamps depict Racing at Dorsett Ferry, Windsor 1684; The First Spring Meeting, Newmarket 1793; The Liverpool Great National Steeple Chase 1839; and, Saddling of Mahmoud for the Derby 1936. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, showing Saddling Mahmoud for The Darby 1936 cancelled from the city of issue (Epsom Surrey) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts the weighing-in of the jockeys. It's printed on silk and 'framed' by a gold-embossed border. Collectible, historic this is a beautiful piece of postal stamp art to honor Horse Racing in Great Britain.
